The difference between a linear/quadratic curve y = f(x) and a linear/quadratic equation f(x) = 0 is that the curve is a set of points (x, y) in the coordinate plane, while the equation is a statement that equates the given function to zero. The solution to an equation is the set of x-values for which the function evaluates to zero. Graphically, these solutions correspond to the x-coordinates of the points where the curve intersects the x-axis.
